The 2011's wide-taillight treatment is a blast from the past; definitely cool with rumored LEDs, but it should have been the taillight layout from the start. The front end is reportedly angrier and gets a new lower fascia (like the rear), and from at least one of the pics it appears that the side could be gaining a styling streak. Oh, and the hood is getting a little more character in the form of those two indentations.
The other big news is that interior. If...IF...that's the final decision on the dash, well...that's a lot of vinyl and silver plastic. As the former owner of a Chrysler with a similar sliced-from-the-inside airbag mechanism (should that be used), let me say this to owners of older cars as a warning: the vinyl may crack through and leave passengers with a nice cut to stare at.
Not too thrilled about that; just because the technology is there to eliminate supplementary restraint system panels doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be done. In this case, I'd rather have an SRS section that would offer some lines to design around instead of that sea of vinyl.
As always, final judgments will come after an official release. For now, we can at least be happy that Dodge is taking its Charger in the right direction.
2011 Dodge Charger Review – Powered with 6.4-liter V8 Engine and 450 Horsepower
With its official reveal just a few weeks away, we’ve put together two exclusive illustrations of the 2011 Dodge Charger. These images show what are believed to be all of the actual design details, down to the revamped front end, restyled greenhouse, and completely redesigned tail end. These illustrations — combined with recent spy photos — reveal an evolutionary, not revolutionary, approach, but we can definitely see where Dodge has made its flagship sedan more aggressive than before. The headlamps are crisply detailed and we like the look of the large diameter wheels and tires.Expected to hit the market later this year as a 2011 model, the redesigned Dodge Charger was previewed recently during Chrysler’s five-year product plan announcement. With a sweeping character line reminiscent of the 1999 Dodge Charger Concept, the car is expected to combine qualities of the present retro model with the more modern show car that preceded it. Dodge brand chief Ralph Gilles said the car will feature a “class-leading” interior to match the dramatic new exterior, and our spy shots seem to back Gilles’ statement — although the Charger’s interior isn’t quite as dramatic as its exterior styling. The car will come standard with Chrysler’s new Pentastar V6, while the more powerful R/T will come with the current 5.7-liter V8. The SRT8, which hardly takes fuel efficiency concerns into account, is expected to be powered by an enlarged 6.4-liter V8 that should boast at least 450 horsepower. It remains unknown if the 2011 Charger will launch with the current car’s five-speed transmission, but our latest spy shots seem to indicate a new eight-speed unit will be available from launch. Look closely and you’ll see a diagnostics screen that says “ZF Engineering”, indicating this prototype is equipped with ZF’s new eight-speed gearbox. Currently, the automaker’s Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant is set to begin production in November 2010. Pricing has not been released, but we expect the base MSRP to remain just over $25,000
